Knowing, Being, & Doing Better: Leadership Strategies for Sustainable Impact
Have you been waiting…for a policy change, a new funding source, or a decision to be made? Are you feeling stuck in your work, unsure how to move the needle in the ways you had hoped? Do you feel like your team is trying to work differently, yet still seeing the same results? Are you tired?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, we get it. Leadership is hard enough as it is. Leading in these rapidly changing times can feel nearly impossible or just utterly exhausting. So, we invite you to pause, to reflect, and to revisit your role, your ways of being, and ways of leading, not as an extra task to check off your list, but as the foundation for meaningful change and sustainable impact.
In this 3-part virtual series, we will introduce the Know Better, Be Better, Do Better (KBD) Approach to leadership. Together, we’ll slow down and explore how we seek understanding and generate knowledge to inform our work, how we show up in relationship with our staff, teams, or community, and how we become more intentional and aligned in our work. Grounded in equity-centered system change and applicable across nonprofit and mission-driven organizations, we will examine how knowledge, mindsets, and action interact to foster a sustainable and joyful organizational culture, thoughtful decision-making, and transformational change.
Each session offers practical strategies, as well as opportunities toreflect and apply learning in real time. The shifts you’re seeking don’t start somewhere else– they start here. Now is the time, and…
“We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.” – June Jordan
Series Dates: Wednesdays, May 6th, 13th, and 20th (9:30am - 11am PT / 12:30pm - 2pm ET)
Session 1: KBD Leadership Strategies: Knowing Better (May 6th)
Description and Objectives:
Knowing Better is not about getting it right all the time. Explore your interpretation of leadership, your values, and the sources of knowledge that shape how you do your work. Together, we will explore and discuss the following questions:
What is our understanding of leadership and what does it mean to be an effective leader?
What values, mindsets, beliefs, and assumptions influence how we lead, and what do we expect a confident leader to do?
How well do we know the people, places, and communities we are seeking to support?
What sources of knowledge, frameworks, and wisdom do we rely on the most in our work? What might we be missing?
Leave this session with actionable strategies to expand your ways of knowing as a leader.
Session 2: KBD Leadership Strategies: Being Better (May 13th)
Description and Objectives:
Being Better is not about what we accomplish. It’s about how we show up and the cultures we create along the way.
Together, we will:
Explore personal cultural identities, mindsets, and values that shape our leadership approach and practices
Identify dominant cultural norms and explore how they appear in different contexts and settings
Examine how your values, mindsets and state of being impact how you interpret and respond to behavior, make decisions, and see possibilities
At the end of this session, you will write a personalized statement to guide your leadership approach and articulate the values, mindsets, and ways of being you’ll use to transform your leadership practices.
Session 3: KBD Leadership Strategies: Doing Better (May 20th)
Description and Objectives:
Doing better is not about doing more. In this session, we will explore how slowing down, prioritizing, and redefining accountability can strengthen both outcomes and relationships. Together, we will:
Identify strategies to disrupt harmful norms to better support equitable, collaborative spaces and teams
Explore five key drivers for behavior change and how they can support equity-centered program, organization, and systems change
You will leave this session with a new personal definition of success you can use to frame and re-examine projects and priorities.
